PRINCETON, WV- The City of Princeton is excited to announce that funding has been awarded to the City for two sidewalk improvement projects.
These improvements are part of the $9.7 million in Transportation Alternatives and Recreational Trails Program grant projects that Governor Jim Justice announced on March 24, 2023. These grants provide the funding needed to build and improve sidewalks, lighting, walking paths, rail trails, and more.
The City will receive $152,460.00 for a 687.73 linear feet Straley Avenue and North 8th Street sidewalk project, and $207,202.50 for a 966.37 linear feet North Thorn Street sidewalk project.
These projects will include the repair and replacement of sidewalk sections. Distressed areas of the sidewalks will be torn out and replaced with new concrete. The sidewalks will be sloped into the street at crosswalk areas, creating better access for pedestrians.
Detectable warning surfaces will also be installed in these sloped areas. This will feature a distinctive surface pattern of domes detectable by cane or underfoot for those with vision impairments. These warning surfaces are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.
“The City would like to thank Governor Jim Justice for his support in these projects! We have seen an uptick of traffic on Thorn and Straley in recent years and believe that these improvements are crucial to serve those that travel these main city roadways. We will look at completing additional sidewalk projects in other areas of the City as they are needed and as funds are available.”- Mike Webb, City Manager
Similar sidewalk improvement projects were completed last year on West Main Street and South Thorn Street.
